Frequently asked questions

About

  • No, we are not a registered charity. One objective of Recycle My Salon is to run the business as a ‘not for profit’ enterprise to keep our prices as affordable as possible for salons and freelancers.

  • For now, we are only recycling used aluminium products and hair waste. We aim to add additional waste streams in the future.

  • No, we have recently added hair recycling as one of our waste streams. We plan to add additional waste streams in the future.

  • We have recently added human hair to our waste streams. We plan to introduce additional waste streams including, plastics, PPE, and towels.

  • For Aluminium: The boxes of collected waste materials are taken to our recycling partner First Mile’s warehouse. Here the products are sorted and baled. They are then sent to a specialist recycling centre whereby any residual waste is removed from the aluminium before undergoing the recycling procedure. All aluminium that is recycled will be re-used in similar or other markets.

For Hair: The boxes of collected human hair waste are taken to our composting facilities. When salon-collected hair reaches our facilities, it's mixed with other organic materials. In a controlled environment, this blend decomposes naturally. With the right balance of moisture, air, and other composting ingredients, the hair breaks down and releases its nutrients, culminating in a nutrient-rich compost. This compost not only supports plant growth but also aids in reducing landfill waste.

Bins

  • You can purchase your bin from the Recycle My Salon website or from several participating hair and beauty wholesalers listed under ‘order from your wholesaler’.

  • No, not at present. All our bins are sold in packs. Each pack consists of 5 Recycle My Salon bins, 1 lid which is reusable, and 25 recycled sacks.

  • Depending on the time of day you order (usually before 2pm), your Recycle My Salon pack should be despatched the same day and should arrive the following day.

  • Putting your bin together is relatively easy. There are flaps on the bins which are numbered (Fold 1, Fold 2, Fold 3 etc). Simply fold the flaps in order and seal the bin into a solid free-standing structure. For more help, please visit our instructions page.

  • Putting your bin lid together is relatively easy. Once constructed, the lid is quite robust and can be used for the 5 bins in your pack. There are flaps on the lid which are numbered (Fold 1, Fold 2, Fold 3 etc). Simply fold the flaps in order and seal the lid into a solid free-standing structure. For more help, please visit our instructions page.

  • As a wholesaler, if you would like to stock bins for your customers you have two options. If you are a Procare customer, you can buy your bins from them, and they will send out Recycling Packs Partnerships link. If you are not a Procare customer, please click here.

Collections

  • Please visit the Collections page on the Recycle My Salon website. Make sure your sacks are sealed (you can push the bags down to make more room for more products). Once the bin is full, remove the lid, seal the flaps on top of the bin with tape, scan the QR code on the bin and arrange for your bin to be collected. You can keep your bin lid to use on your next bin. For video instructions, click here.

  • The bin lids are quite robust, so we suggest that you use the same lid for all 5 bin bases in your Recycling Pack. Once your first bin is full, simply seal it up and arrange for it to be collected and use your lid on your next bin.

  • Yes, please tie up your bags of used aluminium materials and hair waste. It is preferable to compress the bags of aluminium & hair down inside the bin to make room for as much used product as possible. You can put two or three sacks in the same bin if needed, but please continue to keep aluminium waste and hair waste in the separate bins provided.
